Marcia Binnendyk / Sculptural Works

Fine Art for the Home and Garden

Introduction

My work is informed by time spent in my garden and nature, as well as simple and seemingly insignificant events from my day to day life. Grown from a desire to create beautiful objects that can interact with the environment, the seasons, and the elements, I transitioned to this work. My desire is to create work that can happily live outdoors and become a part of nature in a way. A few years ago, after feeling a little worn down by the hectic and crowded life style of Los Angeles, I moved to West Covina, California. Although this community is a mere 25 minutes east of downtown Los Angeles, the move has allowed my work to grow in ways I could never have predicted. I now live in a hundred year old farm house with an expansive and surprised filled garden. I have set about to create a collection of sculptures worthy for this wonderful garden.

My work starts with a rebar, wire, and concrete armature. Although this base is very heavy, solid, and difficult to move, I try to keep a very open approach to the work, and often the piece will undergo a transformation before its completion.

Providing a contemporary context for imagery and stories of cross-cultural mythic traditions is of primary importance to me. My work is handmade, with great care and attention given to detail. I deliberately choose to create work that celebrates the power of the human hand and the small overlooked jewels of our daily existence, in an effort to counter balance the dominant belief system of the unlimited powers and superiority of a technologically based society.
